AI

Automatic Indexing, a Nikon term for lenses introduced in 1977 which communicate aperture setting to the camera body and (unlike earlier lenses) do not need any manual calibration of the maximum aperture.
AI works using a ridge on the back of the aperture ring on the lens (top right of the lens above) which couples to a sensing arm on the camera.
