Nikon D40 resources
26 February 2023
Entry level DSLR which replaced the D50 in 2006, adding higher ISO capability and fast flash sync speed. But it was also the first Nikon autofocus SLR to lack a built-in focus motor, which meant it relied on the new generation of AF-S lenses to focus. As a result, the D40 (and the D40x, D3xxx and D5xxx series which followed it) could not take full advantage of the vast population of motorless AF and AF D lenses which formed the majority of Nikon kits worldwide. As a bargain Nikon F DSLR today that limits its usefulness, and the lack of video capability is another drawback. But prices are keen, so as a starting point or a backup stills camera the D40 could still be worth considering.
