Mirror

Mirror in an SLR camera

In SLR cameras, a mirror is used to reflect the image from the lens up to the viewfinder via the pentaprism. The mirror automatically flips up out of the way when the shutter release is pressed, and drops back down after the exposure.

Some SLRs have a secondary mirror to reflect light to the autofocus sensors.

Mirrors are also used in mirror lenses.
