Contrast detection
An autofocus system which determines when the subject is in focus by looking for maximum contrast - the difference in tone between adjacent pixels.
Contrast detection autofocus is generally less adept at subject tracking because as the subject moves and focus is lost, the system has no indication of whether the subject has moved closer or further away.
Compare phase detection.
