Circle of confusion
A theoretical perfect lens focuses light to an infinitessimally small point. In the real world a lens will not quite focus the light perfectly and instead forms a spot of measurable diameter. The circle of confusion is the largest diameter of spot considered to be indistinguishable from a point of light.
