Buffer

Memory the camera uses to store images before they are written to the memory card.

The size of the buffer and the size of image the camera shoots determines how many pictures can be shot before the buffer is full, known as the buffer depth.

Once the buffer is full the rate the camera can shoot at is determined by how fast images can be written to the card. Writing to the card is slower than writing to the buffer, so when the buffer is full the shooting speeds slows.
