Accessory shoe
Mounting on a camera used to fit flash guns, video lights and other ancillaries.
Can be a hot shoe (with electronic contacts) or a cold shoe (without contacts).
Derived from a viewfinder mounting bracket created in 1913 by Oskar Barnack (1879-1936) for the first Leica cameras.
