18% grey
Standard mid-grey tone which light meters use as a reference.
An 18% grey tone is approximated by grass, trees, average tarmac, dull brick or the back of the photographer's hand.
A scene which is lighter in tone than 18% grey will tend to cause underexposure.
A scene which is darker in tone than 18% will tend to cause overexposure.
